MEASURING SOCIAL IMPACT CAN HELP FOSTER A STRONGER EUROPEAN SOCIAL ECONOMY

Social enterprises and nonprofit organizations need to change the way they measure the impact of their work and become learning organizations, able to influence public policy.

In theory, social impact measurement should be a powerful tool to improve the European social economy. It can help individual organizations set realistic objectives; monitor, learn from, and improve their activities; prioritize decisions; and access funding. Collectively, social impact measurement can help organizations working on similar social issues or in similar geographic areas better understand the aggregate impacts of their work and collaborate to achieve greater change.

And at a European level, agreed upon standards, common indicators, and benchmarks can allow policy makers to evaluate the impact of the social economy on society, advocate for more public funding of social economy organizations, and help donors and investors direct their resources to the interventions that have the most impact.European Perspectives on the Emerging Social EconomyAcademics and scholar practitioners explore how the social economy could transform Europe and the rest of the world.

IKEA FOUNDATION COMMITS 1 BILLION TO REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

The IKEA Foundation has committed €1 billion to climate programmes over the next five years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in alignment with the Paris Agreement.

This new funding will see the foundation support renewable energy initiatives which can deliver reductions in greenhouse gas emissions fast and efficiently. This includes replacing polluting sources of energy with renewable ones and providing access to energy to communities. This new commitment comes in addition to the €500 million which the IKEA Foundation has already planned to spend on climate mitigation and adaptation programmes over the next five years and the €368 million spent between 2014 and 2020 on similar programmes.
