A systemic approach of Italian institutional philanthropy to counter and prevent gender-based violence

The Guidelines: a threefold integrated strategy
The Guidelines are an easy-to-use open source tool for philanthropic organisations and partner organisations that want to be active in the fight against gender-based violence, regardless of their mission, scope of intervention, assets, and territorial scope.
The first step to be actors of change is knowledge: to inform and educate oneself on the different forms of violence consolidated over time and of a structural nature. Only a deep understanding of the phenomenon, its characteristics and the underlying cultural and systemic drivers is essential in becoming actors of change.
In line with the concrete and intentional action of foundations and philanthropic organisations for the realisation of Agenda 2030, it is essential that the gender lens is integrated into every activity and aspect that concerns the foundation regardless of its mission, scope of intervention, assets, territorial scope.
The transformative potential of foundations and philanthropic organisations goes far beyond the financial resources. Social capital, the quality of the relationships they forge, their ability to attract and catalyse different actors on a common theme or territory are some of the assets they can mobilise. Adopting a systemic approach, based on building networks and partnerships, activating integrated interventions and processes, to combat the structural issue of gender-based violence is more necessary than ever. The special position of foundations within the Third Sector can guarantee them a leading and modeling role in promoting concrete and structural action to combat gender-based violence.
A policy adopted by each organisation to stop gender-based violence
Preventing and combating gender-based violence and discrimination, in all its dimensions, is a priority objective for the sustainable development of our communities and for a social and environmental transition based on collaboration and innovation. Foundations and philanthropic organisations can work to harmonise all their efforts on the issue in an organisation’s dedicated document, in the form of a policy, which would provide specific guidelines for the organisation and guide action in the future.
